Introduction to the Pear Collection

The Pear Collection contains dessert, culinar and perry varieties. There are two representatives of each accession. A spacing of 4 m x 3 m has been used for the dessert and culinary collection and 4 m x 2.5 m for the perry pears. The predominant rootstock used is Quince A with Doyenne du Comice as interstock; however some dessert and culinary cultivars are on Quince C.

I. Pyrus communis and P. pyrifolia - Dessert and Culinary Cultivars

The Collection was repropagated and established in its present location between 1973 and 1976. The site covers 1.33 hectares, and the 500 accessions have been planted in blocks of early-, mid- and late-season cultivars. The majority of cultivars in the collection are of P. communis but there are a few Asian Pears, P. pyrifolia. Un-named seedlings and cultivars are grouped at the end of this pear index.

II. Pyrus communis - Perry Cultivars

The Perry Pear Collection was received from IACR - Long Ashton and planted in spring 1991. The 20 cultivars cover 0.04 hectares and are adjacent to the cider apple collection.
