UK Malus Network Database

From Newsletter Issue 2, October 1999

Database contents

A Cultivated Varieties Database has been constructed, which now holds details of over 1430 varieties from 68 collections, excluding the National Fruit Collections at Brogdale, in approximately 30 counties across the UK. Also included in this database are a selection of 240 Malus Species and Ornamentals. In the last month details of many more Malus collections have come to light through the interest in this topical subject and collaboration with Common Ground and their network for Apple Day.

Database structure

Data is organised into the following categories: genus, species/variety and notes on that variety particular to that site. Currently, all variety or species names provided by the collection holder are taken as being accurate but we are finding an inconsistency in the spellings of these names. Please would you check the Spelling since inaccuracy could cause us to add new varieties by mistake. If you are unsure of the correct name look initially on your details of accession i.e. invoice or if the tree has been established for many years maybe the history of the planting.

Accession notes

It is most important that accession notes for all cultivars are maintained or requested upon receipt of material for budding of trees. This will enable you to trace the lineage of that particular variety in the future especially if you need to replace or maybe if there is a request for budwood from another source for identification purposes. It can also help with identification of varieties through their definitive spelling at the initial source.
