This year has seen a busy programme of information gathering and updating the database; boosting the number of recorded cultivars to more than 1560 in 118 collections (excluding the National Apple Collection). Several collections were visited and cultivars identified.
Our database holds a list of 7379 Malus domestica cultivars of which nearly 6000 are described in the National Apple Register (Smith 1971). In addition the database contains a list 194 cider cultivars with 155 having published descriptions, of these 102 are held in the collection at Brogdale. 208 species/ornamentals are also recorded on the database, 64 of these can be viewed at the National Fruit Collections.
All of these statistics have been extracted from data which was supplied by yourselves and gives a very extensive overview of the range of the Malus genetic resources to be found throughout the UK. Analysis of the collected data showed there to be 328 cultivars conserved at only one or two sites and of those, 54 have published descriptions. The cultivar name provided by the collection holder is taken as being accurate, but there are some inconsistencies e.g. Cox, is it Cox’s Orange Pippin or Queen Cox
The following cultivars were found to be the most common in the UK collections surveyed
