Apple Day 21 October

Apple Day is here again and now in its second decade. Be prepared for that little gem to appear on your table for identification . It could be a variety unique to your region. Marcher Apple Network, Norfolk Apples and Orchards Project and the Dartington North Devon Trust are trying to locate a number of cultivars native to their relative locations. e.g. Queen of Apple Sauce and Sea Pippin. Not only is it important to find these old varieties but retain those that have proved their value over the years. They could form a valuable genetic resource for future research. Apple Day is a day for community awareness, be prepared for much interest. If you think that you have discovered an old local variety and have difficulty in finding an accurate description we may be able to help.

Mapping Project

Orchard mapping has been a strong topic of conversation this year. Discussions have taken place between the Northern Fruit Group and the Heritage Lottery Fund about a possible local or national orchard mapping project. The required objectives for a national project varied between the groups consulted by Northern Fruit Group.

Orchard Association

Initial dialogue has taken place over the proposal for the formation of an Orchard Association. At a meeting organised by Richard Fawcett, Senior Landscape Architect at Gloucestershire County Council, a proposed constitution was drafted. The aims of the Association are to act as a national focus for local groups to share information and common interests in tree fruits. Regional bodies will receive an initial communication soon. Funding was not addressed.
